Daily Prompt: a GLAM fright

This is one of my favourite frightening stories that happened to my dad when I was younger. When I was 12, we had an English Pointer, named Sable. These dogs are known for hunting and every time they discern prey, they stop dead still with their one paw up and their tail straight as a stick. I hated it when my dad would go hunting, I would always cry when he brought back the poor dead buck. But Sable was so loving with us children, super intelligent, loved to hunt and was a real loss to the family when he passed away.

He went everywhere with my dad and they often went to the farm on weekends together for their latest adventure!
One particular day, my dad was canoeing down the river and Sable was swimming right next to the canoe, as was his favourite thing.
They reached their destination and left the canoe on the side of the river and proceeded to walk through the bushveld.

After a few minutes, Sable stopped dead in his tracks and assumed his hunting position. My dad looked around and saw nothing. He urged Sable to continue walking.
After a few more seconds Sable stopped again, whimpering, and his tail was pointing very stiffly alerting my dad to danger. Again my father looked around and in the long grass but could not see anything. Thinking Sable was overreacting to a large rat or lizard somewhere in the grass, he urged him to carry on walking.

When Sable stopped for a third time, my dad grew worried and asked him what was bothering him and tried assuring him it was okay.

Sable was looking up.

My dad followed his persistent stare.

His eyes led him up to the large tree in front of him.

From the top of the tree, looking down on both my dad and Sable was a large leopard.

Sable stood dead still, waiting for instruction from his master to pursue the kitty cat in the tree, while the colour drained from my dad’s face. They backed off very slowly and got back into the canoe as fast and silently as they could!
Most glam way of getting frightened for sure! 🙂

Mongolian Braai

South Africans are addicted to braais. Braai is our Afrikaans word for BBQ/grill. The difference is we don’t use gas, but either wood, charcoal or briquettes, unless it’s a…

??????????

Mongolian braai! Have you ever had one? We joined in on the fun at my husband’s colleague’s 50th birthday over the weekend.

Basically, you cook your own food. As if you want to go to a party and cook your own food! But it’s loads of fun! The host will tell you beforehand what to bring, like the chicken, beef etc. Everything is laid out on the table and you fill your bowl with what you like and head off to the skottel braai and cook your food!
We had a range of beef, chicken, pork, calamari and a load of sides like chopped pineapple, mushrooms, spring onions, leeks, rice, noodles, bean sprouts, shredded cabbage and lettuce etc, with a range of sauces. Forgive the bad quality photos, I took them with my phone

Out of the mouths of babes

After a sun-filled day at the beach, we relaxed in front of the TV with a cup of coffee. An advert for shampoo (‘we viciously test on animals but you’re worth it, shampoo!’) came on and the woman in the ad had long, luxurious and shiny black hair.

I said to my 5 year old daughter, “Wow, she has beautiful hair right?”
“You have that hair Mommy!” she lovingly exclaimed.

Just as the advert was nearing its end, she innocently stated, “Oh no wait Mommy, you don’t. I just heard the man say soft hair…..”

Daily Prompt: Celebrate Good Times

One of my favourite things are Water Parks! I’m like a kid in a candy store when I’m there. We decided that the best way to celebrate the end of our recent holiday was at a Waterpark at the Wild Coast Sun, on the South Coast of South Africa. Let it be mentioned that I had no shame going down the kiddy supertubes with my toddler. 😉
The view from the top of the supertubes is breathtaking because the park is situated right next to the ocean!

Daily Prompt: Luxurious – Wildlife

Sunshine

Living in Africa, I cannot do without the luxury of getting up close and personal with wildlife.
I managed to feed and stroke this giraffe, as I have many other wild animals.
Definitely a luxury I will never be able to live without!
