So, a donkey walks into a bar and orders a Coke…

Literally.

 

There is this cute to-die-for family bar in Ramsgate, called Pistols Saloon – which is in the South Coast of South Africa. It is a Western Cowboy themed bar, with its own Wild West Museum.
But the best part is their resident donkey, Huckleberry!  I don’t drink but I had to go to see him. Animals always attract me. He just roams on in whenever he feels the need to drink Coca Cola out of the can, munch on carrots and receive adoring pats and rubs from the patrons. Isn’t he adorable? 

 

 

What I really like is that the owners are animal-friendly conscious:

After a sun-filled day at the beach, we relaxed in front of the TV with a cup of coffee. An advert for shampoo (‘we viciously test on animals but you’re worth it, shampoo!’) came on and the woman in the ad had long, luxurious and shiny black hair.

I said to my 5 year old daughter, “Wow, she has beautiful hair right?”
“You have that hair Mommy!” she lovingly exclaimed.

Just as the advert was nearing its end, she innocently stated, “Oh no wait Mommy, you don’t. I just heard the man say soft hair…..”

National Cupcake Day: Horlicks Cupcakes with Maltezers icing!

 

I really enjoy baking…not that I’m very good at it, I guess I’m a sucker for punishment in the kitchen!

But Saturday was National Cupcake Day. The majority of South Africans baked cupcakes for a cancer charity we have, called Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer. So…unfortunately I had completely forgotten the date 😦 so resorted to baking something up on my lonesome. 
I had leftover Horlicks from winter and *light bulb moment* decided to try out a Horlicks cupcake. I adore Maltezers and Whispers, I can easily eat a kilo of them if they weren’t so expensive! This icing is explosively delicious! If you like Maltezers or any malt drink, you will love this! It’s lekker (Afrikaans word for nice, awesome). It’s Horlicks in a buttercream form! Moving on…

Whip up a batch of your favourite chocolate cupcake, and substitute half the cocoa for Horlicks in the recipe.

For the icing you need:

• 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
• 1 bag of Maltezers, crushed finely (put aside enough Maltezers to decorate one for each cupcake) 
• 1/2 cup butter, softened
• 2 Tbs of Horlicks
• 3 – 4 tablespoons heavy cream
• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

1. Sift sugar and Horlicks together into a large bowl. 
2. In another bowl combine 1 cup of sugar and Horlicks mixture with butter and 1 tablespoon cream, beating until smooth. Add another cup of sugar and another tablespoon of cream, beating well. Add crushed Maltezers and mix in.
3. Continue until all ingredients are combined and beat in vanilla. Pipe onto cupcakes. Top each cupcake with one Maltezer.

Daily Prompt: Celebrate Good Times

One of my favourite things are Water Parks! I’m like a kid in a candy store when I’m there. We decided that the best way to celebrate the end of our recent holiday was at a Waterpark at the Wild Coast Sun, on the South Coast of South Africa. Let it be mentioned that I had no shame going down the kiddy supertubes with my toddler. 😉
The view from the top of the supertubes is breathtaking because the park is situated right next to the ocean!

Back in the garden of Eden, before the stupid apple was eaten. There I could live my life the way it was supposed to be – among animals, in perfect bliss where no children or animals are abused like they are today

Tell how you are feeling today in the form of a weather report. (For example, partly cloudy, sunny with a chance for showers, etc.)
Cloudy with a chance of a Johannesburg thunderstorm! This is my first day back at work after an awesome week’s break at the sea! Boring! This is what I left behind, do you blame me?

List at least two things in nature do you find most beautiful?
Easy – animals and the ocean! I’m at the most peace and joy when I’m around either of the two, and you can never catch me in a foul mood then!

Padkos and Beaches

I have arrived at the sea with my feet nestled in beach sand! My husband won a competition through work- a week’s holiday at the coast, free accommodation!

We left at 4am and the trip got off to a rough start- the worst highway in the world resides in South Africa. The infamous N3 that claims lives every damn day. So there was a massive accident and they closed the whole highway. How inconvenient. Which means we had to detour and travel on this hideous farm road for an hour until we got back onto the highway. How inconvenient. Dust was our view the entire time. At least I saw a teeny tiny calf that had just been born!

But at least we have ‘padkos’- an Afrikaans term for snacks while traveling. As a South African, not having biltong on board is unpatriotic.

So I’m lapping up our sunny skies and 30 degree C weather! Until next time! 🙂

Michelle’s Weekly Pet Challenge 2

For Michelles Second Weekly Pet Challenge I have decided to introduce you to my morning academic coffee buddy. Academic, because I work at a University and my buddy has quite an expressive vocabulary.

I work on the top floor of my building, and almost every day I have an Egyptian goose fly up to my window. I have taken it upon myself to name him Jake. He looks like a Jake.
Jake is blady cheeky. He knocks on my window loudly with his beak demanding to be let in. And when I don’t, he shouts at me! I don’t know any goose swearwords but I know he swears! Typical South African. But I look forward to this cheeky banter every morning 🙂

They are the most gentle, graceful and humble of creatures!

A great way to wake up!

 

My favourite way to wake up! My cat, Nebraska, runs up to me when my alarm goes off, pulls away the blankets, climbs in and snuggles up. And often uses my arm as a pillow 😀
